Part of the 80's and 90's French film movement 'Cinéma du look', Subway favours style over substance, director Luc Besson creates an alternative universe in the underground catacombs of the Paris Metro subway system, a stylish, dark world full of mysterious (and some hilarious) characters, the deliberatley thin plot only adds to the enjoyment and the viewers ability to become fully immersed in this self contained world, with Christoph Lambert and Isabelle Adjani's performances lifting the film emotionally, while the supporting cast add drama and comedy, (the great Jean Reno is brilliant fun as 'the drummer') and as usual with Luc Besson films, composer and bass player Eric Serra (who plays a composer and bass player in the film) brings a distinctly 80's and decidely french soundtrack that adds even more feel to this alterna-world.
